After being turned away in trying to join the Union Army in the Civil War, Wyatt Earp (
Kevin Costner) studies law and marries Urilla Sutherland (
Annabeth Gish). When Urilla dies, Wyatt descends into drinking and petty thievery, until his father Nicholas (
Gene Hackman) sobers him up, and sets him straight. Wyatt becomes a buffalo hunter, getting close to Bat Masterson (
Tom Sizemore) and his brother Ed (
Bill Pullman). With his brothers, Virgil (
Michael Madsen) and Morgan (
Linden Ashby), Wyatt, with guns blazing, cleans up the violence-plagued towns of the old West. Earp takes up with prostitute and drug addict Mattie Blaylock (
Mare Winningham), but leaves her for actress Josie Marcus (
Joanna Going). In Tombstone, Arizona, the Earp brothers and Wyatt's tuberculosis-plagued compulsive gambler best friend Doc Holliday (
Dennis Quaid), finally meet their match in a ruthless gang led by Ike Clanton (
Jeff Fahey).
