Christian (Ewan McGregor), defies his father and leaves Scotland to become a pennyless writer in 1899 Paris. However, a group of Bohemians convinces Christian to write a musical instead, and Christian dives into the project. He soon meets the beautiful Satine (Nicole Kidman), the star of the most famous underworld night club in Paris -- the Moulin Rouge -- and promptly falls head-over-heels in love with her. However, Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent), the club's owner, can only push through with the play if The Duke (Richard Roxburgh) provides the money. But the Duke will only provide his patronage if Satine becomes exclusively his.
